On June 17, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized emergency use of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for children 6 months and older.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) voted on June 18 to recommend the authorized vaccines, and CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH, endorsed the committee’s recommendation.
The FDA authorization and CDC recommendation follow extensive clinical trials and expert reviews. COVID-19 vaccines are safe and can help protect children against severe disease.
